City shelter to hold pet adoption fair

Here's a chance to add a furry new family member. The Delano Animal Shelter is holding an adoption fair this Saturday.

The event runs 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 816 10th Ave., which is behind Delano Pets & Supplies.

Special discounts will be available the day of the fair, according to the city.

Immigration rally to mark Cesar Chavez Day

Cesar Chavez' birthday will be celebrated with people gathering in Delano to seek immigration reform.

Thousands of farm workers and community activists are expected to turn out for the event March 28 at Cesar Chavez Park, according to a news release from the United Farm Workers of America.

Chavez, a labor and civil rights activist, was born on March 31, 1927. His birthday is celebrated as an official holiday in eight states, including California.

In 1966, Chavez bought his Forty Acres compound outside of Delano, where he would fast for better wages and working conditions. The U.S.

Kids get banged up as school bus nearly crashes

A Bakersfield City School District bus nearly missed crashing into a pickup Wednesday near Rabobank Arena.

The students were en route to the Young People's Concert, which gives elementary and secondary students a way to hear symphony music.

The bus driver slammed on the brakes when a GMC Sierra driven by 68-year-old Mickie Mendez, of Delano, turned in front of the bus on eastbound Truxtun Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

None of the kids appeared to have serous injuries, though 11 of the 38 students were taken to a hospital with complaints of pain from hitting their heads, the CHP said.

Element Skateboards to make contest stop in Delano

Element Skateboards will stop in Delano for its Make It Count international contest series.

Skaters will compete March 13 at Delano Skatepark with the chance of making it to the Element YMCA Skate Camp near Sequoia and Kings Canyon national parks. There, skaters will vie for the opportunity to be sponsored by Element and further their skating career, according to a company news release.

Registration will be at noon that day, with the contest starting at 1 p.m. Entry is free with the donation of a canned food item, which will be donated to a local food bank.

Element will hold similar contests across the county and in 17 foreign countries. The series kicked off Jan.

H1N1 vaccine clinic on tap

The Kern County Department of Public Health will offer an H1N1 vaccine clinic from 3-7 p.m. March 12 at the Delano Child Development Center, 1835 Cecil Ave.

The free flu clinic is meant for adults and children older than 10 who need their first and only dose or for children age 9 or younger who need their first or second dose, according to a public health news release.

Golfers asked to help the arts in Delano schools

The Delano Men's Golf Association is holding a tournament to benefit the Delano Union School District's Performing & Arts Foundation.

The "Kickoff Classic" will be held Saturday, May 15 at 9 a.m. at the Delano Golf Course.

The entry fees are $50 per person with a cart and $200 per team, or $40 per person walking and $160 per team.

County firefighters to train in old Kmart

Kern County firefighters will train Feb. 24 in the old Kmart building at 2310 High Street.

The city is offering use of the building for a pair of training sessions before the building is demolished, according to a fire department news release.

A large-area search, usage of a thermal-imaging camera and air management will be covered by the training sessions. At the end of the individual scenarios, all crews will combine for two large-scale exercises involving a firefighter entrapment and/or injury scenario, according to the news release.

Kidnap attempt foiled, suspect jailed

A Delano man was arrested a short time after police were called to a parking lot on Jefferson Street February 9th to a report of an attempted kidnapping.

The victim told officers a man grabbed her just before 11 a.m. while she was putting her baby in her car and tried to force her to leave the area.

The woman was able to resist and the suspect left.

Police were able to make an arrest within minutes of the report because the victim supplied officers  license plate information from the suspect's vehicle according to a department news release.

The suspect is identified as 33-year-old Juan Ramirez Ceron. He faces charges of kidnap and sexual battery.

Deputies investigating vehicle explosion

Authorities are looking for someone who may have blown up a vehicle.

Kern County firefighters were called early Thursday to a vehicle fire at 17th Avenue and Lexington Street. Firefighters determined the fire could have been started by an explosive devise, so they called out the sheriff's office, according to a sheriff's office news release issued Friday.

Bomb squad members examined the vehicle and confirmed that an explosive devise was used to start the fire. Witnesses also reported seeing someone run from the scene before the fire.

Investigators are searching for the person responsible, though no suspect information has been released. Anyone with information helpful to the case is asked to call Sgt. Sean Pratt at 868-6881.

Delano man escapes from Taft prison

Authorities are looking for a Delano man who escaped from prison.

Omar Paniagua Zaragoza, 33, was serving time in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking crime. He was set for release in 2017.

Zaragoza was found missing Sunday night from the Taft Correctional Institution's satellite camp facility, which is a minimum-security facility and does not have a security fence.

Zaragoza's home is listed by the prison as being on Glenwood Street in Delano.
